How to Identify High-Quality Bolts: Markings, Standards, and Tests
Bolts are among the most frequently specified fasteners in machinery, construction, automotive, and industrial plants. Ensuring the quality of bolts that join structural parts is paramount for system integrity. A low-grade bolt may stretch, break, or corrode over time, endangering the entire assembly. Recognizing high-quality bolts requires understanding key technical criteria.
1. Production Standards and Norms: Premium bolts are manufactured in strict compliance with DIN, ISO, and ASTM standards. Certified manufacturing guarantees accurate shank diameters, thread tolerances, and predictable yield limits.
2. Material Grade and Property Class: Bolt heads must bear legible stamped markings indicating the manufacturer logo and property class (such as 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, or 12.9 according to ISO 898-1). For heavy machinery and steel structures, property class 8.8 and above is mandatory.
3. Clean Thread Profile: Quality bolts feature smooth, clean, rolled threads completely free of burrs, micro-cracks, or pitch errors. Flawless threading prevents galling during tightening and ensures maximum clamping force.
4. Protective Surface Coating: Whether electro-galvanized, hot-dip galvanized, or stainless steel (A2/A4), the protective plating must be uniform and adhere securely to prevent premature corrosion.
5. Mill Test Certification (EN 10204 3.1): Reliable manufacturers verify each production batch with spectral chemical analysis, tensile pull tests, and Rockwell/Vickers hardness testing.
